This antique U. S. Model 1816 musket was made by the Springfield arsenal circa 1834. Originally issued as a flint lock musket, most of the U. S. Model 1816 and later muskets were converted to percussion and issued for use during the Civil War.

The tapered round 42" barrel .69 caliber. Originally issued as a smooth bore, this barrel was recut with very shallow rifling similar to the work done on later model 1842 muskets. It is likely this alteration was performed at the same time as the conversion to percussion. With well over 170 years of use the bore of the barrel has become dark and pitted. The same is true of the walnut stock, coming near the 2nd century of existence the wood stock has suffered many handling marks, dents, and dings over time as well as a certain amount of shrinkage due to continued drying of the wood.
